An eight-week online certification programme aims to meet the growing demand for skilled software architects in an evolving digital world.

The University of Cambridge Online, in collaboration with edtech leader Simplilearn, has unveiled an industry-aligned certification programme titled Managing Software Architecture, targeted at professionals with at least two years of experience in software or related domains. Delivered through Cambridge Advance Online, the course is designed to equip learners with advanced skills in designing and implementing software architecture that meets evolving business and technical needs.
This announcement arrives at a critical time. The global software development industry is projected to grow significantly—from $203 billion in 2022 to a staggering $1.45 trillion by 2031. With digital transformation accelerating across industries and a sharp increase in the use of AI, automation, and low-code platforms, the need for capable software architects has never been higher. Employment in the field is expected to grow by 25% over the next decade.
The course, designed under the academic leadership of Jasmin Jahic, Director of Studies in Computer Science at Queens’ College, University of Cambridge, focuses on the intersection of coding and management. “This course teaches you how to think like an architect and evaluate competing design solutions through structured, collaborative discussions,” said Jahic.
Structured over eight weeks, the course offers 6–8 hours of weekly learning content, combining live sessions with Cambridge faculty, independent research, discussions, and practical exercises. The curriculum includes architectural documentation, design patterns, quality assessments, and emerging technologies like AI and their role in shaping future architectures.
Krishna Kumar, Founder and CEO of Simplilearn, emphasized the strategic value of the programme: “As software systems become more complex, this programme enables professionals to lead architectural decisions that drive scalable, sustainable business solutions.”
Professionals likely to benefit from the programme include experienced software engineers, DevOps engineers, project managers, and aspiring software architects. While some programming knowledge is helpful, the course is also accessible to those from adjacent technical backgrounds looking to grow their architectural thinking skills.
Graduates of the course will earn a dual certificate from both the University of Cambridge and Simplilearn. They will also gain access to Cambridge’s exclusive LinkedIn alumni network, providing continued professional exposure and global networking opportunities.
This launch highlights the growing collaboration between academia and industry-focused edtech platforms, offering professionals access to cutting-edge, globally recognized credentials tailored to the fast-evolving software landscape.
