American Airlines intends to significantly expand its technology capabilities in India, reflecting the country’s growing prominence as a hub for digital engineering, artificial intelligence, and innovation. According to sources familiar with the development, the airline plans to double the workforce at its Hyderabad-based technology unit, taking the employee count to nearly 800 by early next year.
The expansion highlights the increasing importance of Global Capability Centers (GCCs) operated by multinational corporations in India for high-value functions beyond traditional back-office operations. Companies across sectors such as banking, retail, aviation, pharmaceuticals, semiconductors, and technology are increasingly establishing advanced digital and engineering capabilities within the country.
GCC Ecosystem in India Continues to Expand Rapidly
India has emerged as the world’s leading GCC hub. According to the 2026 report by NASSCOM and Zinnov, the country currently hosts more than 2,100 GCC centres employing around 2.36 million professionals and generating nearly $100 billion in annual revenue.
While GCCs were initially established as low-cost outsourcing centres, they are now widely regarded as innovation hubs handling critical functions such as software development, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, research and development, finance, and operations management.
India’s vast pool of engineering talent, comparatively lower cost structure, expanding digital infrastructure, and thriving startup ecosystem have transformed cities such as Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Pune, Chennai, and Gurugram into major centres of global technological activity.
American Airlines Strengthens Hyderabad Technology Centre
American Airlines established its technology centre in Hyderabad in 2024 as part of its global digital infrastructure strategy. At present, the facility employs nearly 400 professionals specialising in software development, cybersecurity, and AI-powered operational systems.
Although the company has not officially disclosed its staffing targets, it has confirmed its hiring plans for the Hyderabad centre. Speaking about the collaboration, a company official stated that teams located in Fort Worth, Phoenix, and Hyderabad work together to enhance operational efficiency, accelerate digital transformation, and improve customer experience through technology.
According to the company, American Airlines has consistently increased investments in its technology infrastructure and expanded its technology workforce since 2021.
More Companies Expand Technology Investments in India
American Airlines is not the only aviation company increasing its footprint in India. Recently, Southwest Airlines announced plans to expand its Hyderabad GCC operations to nearly 1,000 employees over the coming years.
Several multinational corporations, including JPMorgan Chase, Walmart, McDonald’s, Nvidia, and Eli Lilly, have also expanded their technology and engineering operations in India in recent years.
Within the aviation sector, technology has become increasingly essential for operational resilience, aircraft maintenance, automation of customer services, cybersecurity, and advanced analytics.
Hyderabad Emerges as a Major Technology Hub
Hyderabad has emerged as one of India’s leading technology destinations, attracting substantial investments from global corporations. The city offers a strong combination of engineering talent, robust infrastructure, competitive operational costs, and supportive state-level policies.
The growth of technology parks, startup ecosystems, and higher educational institutions has further strengthened Hyderabad’s position as a preferred destination for multinational companies seeking to establish digital and engineering operations.
The growing presence of airline GCCs in Hyderabad is also expected to strengthen India’s role in the global aviation technology ecosystem.
Impact on Employment and the Economy
The continued expansion of GCCs is expected to create significant employment opportunities, particularly in the technology sector. Analysts believe that the GCC ecosystem in India is becoming increasingly important not only for services exports and revenue generation but also for innovation and product development by multinational corporations.
Industry experts predict that future GCC growth will be driven by advancements in artificial intelligence, automation, cloud-based solutions, cybersecurity, and analytics.
American Airlines’ decision to expand its technology centre in Hyderabad reflects India’s growing importance in the global digital economy. What were once considered outsourcing centres have now evolved into critical hubs for innovation, engineering, and advanced technology operations within multinational corporations.
As companies across industries continue to establish sophisticated technology capabilities in India, the country’s GCC ecosystem is expected to play an even more significant role in driving global business transformation and innovation.
