National Press Day 2024: Celebrating the Changing Nature of Press

PCI emphasizes ethical journalism in the era of digital transformation.

The Press Council of India (PCI) marked National Press Day 2024 with an event at the National Media Centre, New Delhi, centered on the theme “Changing Nature of Press.” Distinguished leaders, veteran journalists, and media professionals came together to discuss the challenges and opportunities posed by the evolving media landscape.

Keynote Address and Government Perspectives
Mr Ashwini Vaishnaw, Hon’ble Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Railways, Electronics & IT, attended as the Chief Guest through video conferencing. Addressing the gathering, he highlighted challenges like the impact of artificial intelligence, algorithmic biases, and the lack of fair compensation in the traditional media sector. MrVishnaw emphasized the importance of free media as a cornerstone of Indian democracy and called for open debates to address the challenges of the changing media landscape. Reflecting on the Emergency period in Indian history, he reaffirmed the government’s commitment to safeguarding press freedom.

Hon’ble Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting, Dr. L. Murugan, extended his congratulations to the media fraternity while expressing concern about the proliferation of fake news on social media platforms. “The nation’s sovereignty cannot be put at stake by the explosion of misinformation and disinformation,” he stated, underscoring the need for stringent measures against fake news.

PCI’s Role in Ethical Journalism
PCI Chairperson, Mrs. Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai, in her welcome address, highlighted the Council’s efforts in upholding journalistic integrity. She emphasized the importance of maintaining ethics amidst technological advancements like artificial intelligence. Justice Desai shed light on PCI’s impactful initiatives, including National Awards for Excellence in Journalism, safety advisories for journalists, and fostering ethical journalism through internship programs.

“The changing nature of the press, driven by digital platforms, has brought efficiency and reach. However, it’s crucial to maintain journalistic ethics and core values while serving the people amidst these technological transformations,” said Justice Desai.

Voices from the Media Fraternity
Veteran journalist and Padma Bhushan awardee MrKundan Ramanlal Vyas addressed the rapid evolution of digital platforms and its impact on print media. He advocated for strategic steps to sustain print media and proposed transforming PCI into the Media Council of India, which would encompass social media under its purview. MrVyas also stressed the importance of empowering PCI with punitive powers to address violations effectively.

MrSanjay Jaju, Secretary, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, highlighted Indian media’s role in social awakening, public education, and policy awareness. He elaborated on recent reforms, including the Press and Registration of Periodicals Act, 2023, and initiatives like insurance coverage, health benefits, and capacity-building programs for journalists.

Embracing Innovation
In his vote of thanks, PCI Secretary, Dr. Dhiraj Kakadia, urged journalism students to embrace artificial intelligence and digital innovations to make their work more impactful.

A Collaborative Event
The event witnessed active participation from eminent journalists, dignitaries, journalism students, and senior officers. Discussions highlighted the dynamic nature of journalism, underscoring the need for strategic reforms, ethical practices, and innovative approaches to strengthen the media’s role in democracy.

This celebration of National Press Day reaffirmed the press’s critical role in shaping a well-informed and empowered society while addressing the challenges of a rapidly changing media environment.
