India Eyes $2 Billion Military Drone Purchase in Major Boost to Domestic Defence Industry

India is set to undertake one of the biggest military procurement projects involving drones in its history, with total contracts expected to surpass $2 billion (over ₹200 billion), most of which will reportedly be sourced from indigenous manufacturers. This reflects the increasing focus of Indian authorities on unmanned combat systems amid changing battlefield dynamics and lessons learned from recent global conflicts.

According to industry sources currently working with the government, the project is nearing finalisation and may be implemented through a fast-track process to meet urgent operational requirements. If the deal is finalised, it would represent a substantial increase compared to previous drone procurements valued at around ₹30 billion.

Procurement through Fast-Track Process under Discussion

According to Smit Shah, President of the Drone Federation India (DFI), procurement of tactical drones during the upcoming phase could exceed ₹200 billion. He further stated that the delivery timeline for such drones may range between 18 and 24 months, indicating that the government may adopt an emergency or fast-track procurement route.

Fast-tracking defence acquisitions has become increasingly common within India’s defence procurement framework. Earlier, the military procurement process often took several years after approvals were granted. However, reforms introduced under the Defence Acquisition Procedure (DAP) have enabled the armed forces to acquire critical equipment more quickly in response to evolving operational needs.

Although the Ministry of Defence has not yet made any official announcement regarding the proposed drone purchase, recent government approvals aimed at modernising the armed forces suggest that unmanned systems are gaining strategic importance.

Lessons from Contemporary Warfare

India’s interest in military drones has intensified following its stand-off with Pakistan in May 2025, during which both countries reportedly deployed significant numbers of unmanned aerial systems. Globally, conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East have significantly reshaped military thinking regarding drone warfare.

Relatively low-cost unmanned systems have been used effectively for surveillance, targeting high-value assets, and disrupting conventional air defence networks.

Military analysts increasingly describe drones as “force multipliers” that provide greater tactical advantages while reducing dependence on expensive conventional aircraft. Defence sector executives believe that India’s armed forces now view drones as an essential component of future warfare rather than merely an optional capability.

Benefits to Domestic Manufacturers

The proposed acquisition is expected to provide a major boost to India’s expanding drone ecosystem. At present, more than 600 companies are involved in the drone industry in India, of which nearly 100 specialise in defence-related drone technologies.

Major corporate groups operating in this sector include Adani Defence, Larsen & Toubro, and Tata Advanced Systems. In addition, start-ups such as ideaForge, NewSpace Research, and Asteria Aerospace have emerged as important players in areas including reconnaissance, logistics, loitering munitions, and autonomous drone systems.

These firms manufacture a wide range of products, including surveillance drones, precision-strike drones, logistics drones, and electronic warfare systems. A large-scale order pipeline is expected to significantly enhance their production capacities.

Government Encouragement of Self-Reliance

The proposed procurement programme aligns with the government’s “Atmanirbhar Bharat” initiative, which seeks to reduce dependence on foreign military equipment while strengthening domestic manufacturing capabilities.

Start-ups have benefited from initiatives such as Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX), which has supported prototype development and initial contract opportunities. The government has also streamlined testing procedures, expanded procurement opportunities for private companies, and enabled repeat orders to help firms improve products and scale production.

According to industry experts, improved policy clarity and better visibility regarding future defence requirements are encouraging venture capital investments and collaboration between start-ups and established defence corporations.

India’s unmanned aerial vehicle industry, once fragmented among small-scale manufacturers, has steadily evolved into an increasingly important component of the country’s defence ecosystem.
