Bisleri International, LAHDC, and Ladakh Marathon Restore 12 Lakh Litre Reservoir in Nubra Valley

Ladakh, Leh, India – Bisleri International Pvt. Ltd., India’s leading packaged drinking water company, has inaugurated the third water reservoir in Nubra Valley, Ladakh, under its flagship initiative, Project Nayi Umeed. The restored reservoir, with a capacity of nearly 12 lakh litres, will ensure a reliable irrigation supply for farming communities and strengthen agricultural resilience in the region.

The project was executed in collaboration with the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Leh, with the Ladakh Marathon serving as the implementing agency. The inauguration ceremony was graced by Shri Rigzen Lundup, Councillor – Tegar Constituency.

The restored reservoir is linked to the Lakjung Irrigation Canal, originating from the Shyok River and stretching approximately 14 km. It provides critical irrigation to three major villages, spanning 7,000 kanals (875 acres) of farmland, and benefits around 300 farming families in Nubra Valley.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. K. Ganesh, Director – Sustainability & Corporate Affairs, Bisleri International, said, “Ensuring water security is critical for communities vulnerable to climate change. The restoration of the third reservoir in Nubra Valley represents a major step in strengthening agricultural resilience and empowering local families. Through Project Nayi Umeed, we aim to deliver sustainable solutions that secure livelihoods, support food security, and bring long-term prosperity to the region.”

Shri Rigzen Lundup added, “Communities in Ladakh face growing challenges due to rising temperatures and variable snowfall. The restoration of this reservoir directly addresses our water needs, enhancing agricultural productivity and improving the lives of local farming families.”

Shri Chewang Motup, Founder & CEO, Ladakh Marathon, said, “As the implementing agency, we are proud to collaborate with Bisleri and LAHDC. The restored reservoir ensures water availability and demonstrates the power of partnerships in building climate-resilient communities in Ladakh.”

This marks Bisleri’s third successful reservoir restoration in Nubra Valley, following projects in 2023 and 2024 that benefitted over 200 households. Project Nayi Umeed, part of Bisleri Greener Promise, has so far built or restored 336 check dams, harvested 28 billion litres of water, and supported over 64,362 farmer families, irrigating more than 20,878 acres of land across India.
