India’s cooperative movement has achieved a significant global milestone as Amul and IFFCO secured the first and second positions in the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA) World Cooperative Monitor 2025. The achievement reflects the growing strength of collective enterprise in Bharat.
Recognising this landmark moment for the Indian cooperative ecosystem, Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Shri Amit Shah congratulated Amul and IFFCO for securing the top two ranks among the world’s leading cooperatives. He noted that the accomplishment symbolises the transformative power cooperative institutions bring to millions of lives while shaping a self-reliant growth model. The minister shared his message in a post on X.
In a major boost for the country’s cooperative sector, Amul and IFFCO emerged as the world’s top two cooperatives in the ICA’s World Cooperative Monitor 2025, with Amul grabbing the No. 1 spot and IFFCO securing No. 2. The recognition highlights the resilience of India’s farmer-led cooperative framework and the government’s continued emphasis on cooperative empowerment and rural self-reliance at a global level.
Amit Shah, in his post on X (formerly Twitter), wrote:
“A proud moment for Bharat! Heartiest congratulations to Amul and IFFCO for occupying the first two ranks among the top ten cooperatives in the world. It is an honour to the tireless dedication of millions of women associated with Amul and farmers contributing to the IFFCO. It is also a testament to the boundless potential of the cooperatives, which is being transformed into a global model of empowerment and self-reliance by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji.”
The ICA’s World Cooperative Monitor report, released in Doha, Qatar, at the ICA CM50 conference, ranks the top 300 cooperatives around the world using metrics such as turnover relative to a country’s GDP per capita. From GCMMF MD Jayen Mehta:
“Amul is a brand owned entirely by farmers. They manage everything – from milk collection and manufacturing to marketing. Our impact goes far beyond economics; our model supports multiple UN Sustainable Development Goals… Our currency isn’t milk – it’s trust, the trust of millions of producers and billions of consumers.”
Broader Initiative / Programme Context:
The recognition comes at a defining moment, as 2025 marks the conclusion of the United Nations’ International Year of Cooperatives, which underscored the social, economic, and governance value of the cooperative model worldwide.
The cooperative model has long been central to India’s rural transformation, particularly through the “White Revolution” led by Amul, which enabled India’s rise from a milk-deficient nation to the world’s largest milk producer. Cooperatives like Amul and IFFCO now demonstrate that inclusive, farmer-owned enterprises with democratic governance and large-scale operations can compete globally—strengthening the government’s vision of an “Atmanirbhar Bharat” rooted in grassroots empowerment.
